Just a few tips to see if you can stretch your CPU a bit further. Also in the Serum settings tab, there is a quality option where it defaults to 2x, but you can reduce it to 1x (Draft mode) until you are ready to export and up the quality of the Serum patch again. See if you can get your sound design to a point where it sounds 90% as good but with 50% of the CPU use. Are you just maxing the voices on your oscillators in every sound you make? Have you tried making sounds with like 5-7 voices or less instead of 16 per oscillators? Most of where Serum eats CPU is when you load a ton of voices on each oscillator and then play chords on top of that. You could lighten the CPU load and use a higher buffer rate and see if that helps.Īnd as far as Serum goes, consider why is it killing your CPU. Have you tried increasing the buffer rate in your audio settings on your laptop? It would add a bit of latency, but buffer rate is one of the settings that impacts CPU the most. I do want to point out two things though. Thoughts on instructors : Both YSAP and Andrew Huang have formal musical training (post-secondary education) and both use Ableton. I'm sure it's possible, but you'd likely have an added latency/lag which could be annoying to deal with considering you're trying to do something live time with audio.
